FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 17, 2017) Garrett Smith of Rexburg, Idaho, took a commanding lead during the opening performance of Bulls’ Night Out at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.
Smith, who’s currently ranked second in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings, was the only cowboy to make a qualified ride on two bulls. In the opening round where 40 cowboys compete, he scored 87 points on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Justin Walk The Line. That secured him the lead spot in the 10-rider short round where he rode Smith, Harper & Morgan Rodeo’s Jukebox Hero for 80 points and a two-bull total of 167 points.
Forty more bull riders will compete Wednesday night in the opening and progressive, short round format. The championship will be awarded to the rider with the highest aggregate score. Bulls’ Night Out at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Xtreme Bulls Tour.
Smith, who qualified for his first National Finals Rodeo in December and finished 5th for the 2016 world championship, said, “I’m glad I got two down. The first bull felt awesome and really bucked. I had a horrible getoff. That’s why we’ve got (bullfighters) Dusty (Tuckness) and them.”
Smith was the final rider in the short round by virtue of having the highest score in the long round. “It’s kinda fun to be last. The spotlight is on you,” he said. “That bull hit his hip on the gate and that threw him out of his normal pattern.”
A 20-hour drive to Fort Worth from Idaho looks to be a good move for Smith. He and last year’s Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo champion bull rider Riker Carter made the trip together. Both will compete Friday night and Saturday morning to try to earn a trip back here for the championship round on Feb. 4.
The highest score of the night went to Boudreaux Campbell of Crockett, Texas, who was one of four lucky cowboys to draw a position in the short round despite bucking off his first bull. The 18-year-old rookie who joined the PRCA after filling his permit last week at Lafayette, La., scored 88 points on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Last Cigarette to lead the short round and sit second overall with the highest one-bull score.
In the junior bull riding for youngsters 10 to 15, Chris Villanueva, 15, of Mesquite, Texas, was the winner for the night. He scored 82.5 points. The crowd favorite was 10-year-old Cooper Lane of Fort Worth who rodeo his bull for 69 points and need help from rodeo clown Troy Lerwill to climb onto the barrel raised his hands in triumph to the delight of audience.
The final Bulls’ Night Out performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, with a new field of bull riders and junior bull riders.
Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo hosts the third annual Fort Worth Super Shootout®, presented by Schaefer. Limited tickets remain for this unique tournament-style rodeo that features winners from eight of North America’s biggest rodeos competing in five events for bragging rights and $10,000 to each event winner.
The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo takes the arena at Will Rogers Coliseum beginning Friday, January 20, and continues for 29 performances over 16 days.
