Capacity crowd cheers on contestants at Caldwell Night Rodeo

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 17, 2016) – If a crowd could inspire contestants to do their best, Thursday night was one for the record books at the Caldwell Night Rodeo.

On a night that honors breast cancer survivors and raises money for local women to get mammograms, rodeo competitors did their best to put on a show for the near-capacity crowd. Some of those contestants are now planning to make a trip back here on Saturday night for the championship finals.

Bareback rider Morgan Wilde from McCammon, Idaho is one of those contestants. He scored 89.5 points in the bareback riding on D & H Cattle Company’s horse named Aussie Aussie Aussie. It was a very important ride for Wilde as any money he wins here will count towards the Wilderness Circuit Standings and give him an opportunity to qualify for their finals.

Wilde has recently returned to competition after more than a six-month hiatus. Last February at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo in Texas, he had a concussion and didn’t realize the effect it had on him until he got home.

“I didn’t know how bad it really was,” Wilde said. “Mentally and physically it really took a toll. Honestly, that break was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I feel really good now and am craving getting on again.”

Thursday did see a new leader in the second round of the barrel racing. Stevi Hillman from Weatherford, Texas, stopped the clock in 17.31 seconds to move into first place. Combined with her previous time of 17.57, she moved into second place in the overall standings with a 34.88.

Hillman is currently 13th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings and could be headed to her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. She won the Reno Rodeo in June and a pair of trophy spurs. The Caldwell Night Rodeo also awards trophy spurs so she now has the opportunity to add another set to her trophy collection.

Over $45,000 was raised through a variety of activities for the Power of Pink Program. It is coordinated with Saint Alphonsus Medical Center and West Valley Medical Center to provide free mammogram screenings for women who qualify that live in the Treasure Valley.

The fourth performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, and it is Patriot Night. Proceeds will go toward Coldwell Night Rodeo’s Military Relief Fund. More information is available at www.caldwellnightrodeo.com
