Spencer Wright wins Pendleton

PENDLETON, ORE. –  Last year, saddle bronc rider Spencer Wright shocked the world.

The Milford, Utah cowboy entered his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 13th place and left Las Vegas a world champion after winning the average.

On Sept. 19, Wright crossed another item off his bucket list – a championship at the prestigious Pendleton Round-Up.

Wright registered a 169-point score on two head to capture the average crown at the Pendleton Round-Up Arena.

“This is probably the biggest rodeo I’ve won this year and it feels pretty special,” Wright said after winning the 105th annual Pendleton Round-Up. “This is definitely one of my top accomplishments. Now, I can check this off my list.”

Wright clinched the coveted victory with an 87-point finals-winning ride on Burch Rodeo Company’s Lunatic Fringe to win the final round. Wright had an 82-point ride in the first round.

“Gosh that ride (on Lunatic Fringe) felt pretty dang good,” said Wright, 24. “You never know what your score is going to be, but I sure was hoping it was going to be good.”

Jacobs Crawley finished second with 166 points on two head.

Wright arrived in Pendleton 10th in the Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings with $67,643, and he’s likely to move up after departing Pendleton with $6,696.

The regular season concludes Sept. 30 and then Wright will have plenty of time to prepare to defend his world championship at the Wrangler NFR Dec. 3-12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“I just need to do the same thing, stay back and lift and be aggressive,” Wright said. “I also need to take one horse at a time and be confident in myself.”

Wright acknowledged his memorable experience in Vegas a year ago – placing in nine of 10 rounds and winning Rounds 4 and 7 – will benefit him on his return trip.

“I’ve had a positive mindset all year, and what I did at the Finals last year was a big confidence boost for me,” Wright said. “It let me know that I could do it (win a world championship) and that I’m capable of doing it. That (world championship) helped me a bunch.”

Other winners at the $469,680 rodeo were bareback rider Ty Breuer (170 points on two head), steer wrestler Hunter Cure (16.6 seconds on three head), team ropers Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith (20.0 seconds on three head) and Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill (20.0 seconds on three head), tie-down roper J.C. Malone (28.2 seconds on three head), steer roper Brent Lewis (41.4 seconds on three head), barrel racer Kimmie Wall (57.33 seconds on two head), and bull rider Sage Kimzey (170 points on two head).
