Ed Hirdes, Jan. 21, 1951- April 19, 2016
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ed Hirdes, a three-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier as a team roping header, and the son of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Les Hirdes, passed away April 19 in his hometown of Turlock, Calif. He was 65.
Ed qualified for the NFR from 1974-76 with Jeff Barmby. He finished a career-best fourth in the world standings in 1976, and was a career-best third in the NFR average in ’74.
Hirdes won five rounds outright over his career at the NFR and shared one round win.
He also was the California Circuit year-end tie-down roping champion in 1977 and 1987, and won the California Circuit Finals Rodeo as a team roping header in 1979 and 1989.
Les Hirdes made 17 trips to the NFR as a team roper and won the world championship and NFR average in 1963 while roping with Al Hooper. In 1962, Les Hirdes and partner Julius Boschi won the NFR average.
Ed Hirdes is survived by his wife, Marilyn, sons, Blake, Case, Grant and Kent, and daughter, Ashley. Blake and Case are California Circuit timed-event champions.
A visitation is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. April 26 at Turlock Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 425, N. Soderquist Road, and the funeral service will be at 10 a.m. April 27, followed by a gathering at the Diamond Bar Arena on the corner of Central and Keyes Roads in Turlock.
