The American Quarter Horse Association is proud to sponsor the biggest single-day rodeo event, RFD-TV’s The American, taking place at 2 p.m. CST on Sunday, February 28, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. 

Through a qualifying system that includes the top 10 contestants in the world in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and Professional Bull Riders; rising stars and retired Hall of Famers; and qualifiers from various events sanctioned by Better Barrel Races, PBR, Ultimate Calf Roping and United States Team Roping Championships, a semi-finals was held February 17-21 in Fort Worth with the top qualifiers advancing to The American finals.

The field of horses competing in barrel racing finals is all registered American Quarter Horses. Check out these interesting tidbits about a few of the amazing 20 horses that will be running on Sunday. (Note: contestants may change horses; information from AQHA records): 

Special Chicado, 2001 sorrel gelding

Ridden by Derek Diedrich of Goose Lake, Iowa

Tidbit – Special Chicado’s sire is American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Special Effort. Special Effort became the first horse to win the Triple Crown for 2-year-old racing American Quarter Horses. He was the 1981 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse and the 1982 champion 3-year-old colt.

Flos Heiress, 2006 sorrel mare

Ridden by Fallon Taylor of Collinsville, Texas

Tidbit – Known as “Babyflo,” Flos Heiress was the 2013 AQHA-PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. What makes Babyflo so special? Tidbit – Two-time RFD-TV American champion Lisa Lockhart’s “Louie” was the 2015 AQHA-PRCA Reserve Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. His paternal bloodlines features cutters like Doc’s Lynx, Doc’s Oak and Hall of Famer Doc Bar. The maternal side includes racing legends Dash For Cash, Rocket Wrangler and Easy Jet.

Tidbit – Slick By Design, aka "Slick," is an AQHA world champion, winning the 2012 junior barrel racing title. Check out his run here. Owners Jason Martin and Charlie Cole are multiple AQHA world champion exhibitors in several events but none in barrel racing.
