For the National Western Stock Show
DENVER (January 15, 2016) --- Last year, Shelby Herrmann left the National Western Stock Show Rodeo with a second-place finish in the barrel race.
This year, the Stephenville, Texas, cowgirl came here determined to win even more money in the Denver Coliseum. She had two outstanding runs here on Friday to take command of the leaderboard. She stopped the clock in 15.30 seconds at the matinee, and as the first Women’s Professional Rodeo Association member to compete took the early lead. Then in her second round of competition, Friday night, she was the last barrel racer to compete but still had a great run at 15.35 seconds.
Herrmann who competed at the College National Finals Rodeo last year for Tarleton State University has a half-second lead over the 2012 world champion Mary Walker from Ennis, Texas. Walker has a total time of 31.11 seconds compared to Herrmann’s 30.65.
Qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is every contestant’s goal and Herrmann came close last year finishing in 22nd place. The top 15 in the world standings get to compete at rodeo’s championships in Las Vegas in December. She won $11,380 here in 2015 and is hoping for a repeat performance this year. Even though the rodeo has just started and there is lots of competition here before the final round on Jan. 24th, Herrmann and Walker will be favorites to make the trip back here and compete for the 2016 National Western Stock Show Rodeo title in the barrel race.
Another contestant hoping to win big money out of Denver is Colorado native Josh Koschel. The bull rider broke his leg last July at the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede. He has just returned to competition and was successful on both of his bulls Friday. The resident of Nunn, Colo., scored 77 and 82 and has a total of 159 points on two head.
He is one of two riders that have ridden two bulls. Cody Campbell from Summerville, Ore., leads the overall standings with 167.5 points. Koschel is in second place. They are both in good positions to be making the trip back here for the finals.
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday with performances at 11 a.m., 3:30 and 8 p.m.
