National Western Rodeo

Baylor Roche kick starts season with Denver win

DENVER – Fresh off his inaugural trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER, steer wrestler Baylor Roche continued his momentum at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo (Jan. 15-24).

The Tremonton, Utah, cowboy clocked a 13.0-second time on three head to capture the average title before a near-capacity crowd of 7,900 at the Denver Coliseum.

Roche clinched the average crown with a solid 4.3-second run in the finals.

“I had a steer they broke the barrier on and was a little bit slower,” Roche said about his steer in the finals. “I wanted to make sure I got a good start, but I wasn’t going to break the barrier. The steer was really good on the ground and I was able to throw him down and let it all play out.”

Roche easily was well ahead of veteran Josh Peek, who came in second with a time of 14.8 seconds on three head.

“This feels really good to win here because that’s something I’ve never done before,” said Roche, who was making his third appearance in Denver.

Roche, 26, left the Mile High City with $10,168 in winnings – $6,188 for winning the average crown.

“I like to stay positive, and hope to keep my momentum going in the winter,” Roche said. “Last year, my first winter rodeo was Fort Worth and I won it (paying him $14,663) and that kept me going into the summer, and I want to do the same thing this year.”

Roche was riding Cruiser, a horse owned by Cole Fulton.

“I rode Cruiser all last year, and I know how to score on him and the horse worked great (Jan. 24),” Roche said.

A year ago, Roche finished a career-best ninth in the world standings with $147,979. He won $66,423 at the WNFR in Las Vegas, including winning Round 10 in 3.6 seconds.

Other winners at the $466,672 rodeo were all-around cowboy Trevor Brazile ($10,200 in team roping and tie-down roping), bareback rider Jake Brown (252 points on three head), team ropers Clay Smith and Paul Eaves (16.7 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Sam Spreadborough (246 points on three head), tie-down roper Brazile (23.8 seconds on three head), barrel racer Shelby Herrmann (46.11 seconds on three runs) and bull rider Cody Campbell (246.5 points on three head).

Tie-down roper Riley Pruitt broke the arena record at the NWSS with his 6.9-second time in the finals. Brazile’s average time in tie-down roping also was a NWSS record.

  • It seems saddle bronc rider Jacobs Crawley is still riding the momentum of his first world championship season. In first place in the 2016 standings after his win at the SandHills Stock Show Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, a week ago, Crawley followed that up this past weekend with another win, at the Homestead (Fla.) Championship Rodeo, and a second-place finish in Denver that brought his total earnings for the season to $21,299 – the highest total in any event.

Bareback rider Jake Brown wins the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo with a 252-point score on three head at the Denver Coliseum.

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER, (Jan. 24, 2016) --- When the 110th annual National Western Stock Show came to a close on Sunday, there were some very happy contestants in the Denver Coliseum.

A near capacity crowd of over 7,400 people were on hand to see the action. Jake Brown, Baylor Roche and Clay Smith are all coming off of their first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifications and left with National Western titles.

Brown, from Hillsboro, Texas, won the bareback riding with a total score of 252 points. He earned a total of $10,620. He also wowed the crowd earlier in the competition with a 90-point effort on Calgary Stampede’s great bucking horse Reckless Margie. This is the same horse that took Tim O’Connell to an 87-point score at the finals. O’Connell from Zwingle, Iowa tied for the round win with Richmond Champion from The Woodlands, Texas, who rode Cervi Brother’s Rodeo Houston’s Gander Goose.

Roche dominated the steer wrestling earning the title with a total of 13.0 seconds on three runs. His nearest competitor was Colorado’s Josh Peek who made three runs in 14.8. Roche from Tremonton, Utah earned $10,168 here.

“I think that the guys that were at the NFR have an edge at these building rodeos,” Roche said. “I feel like I’m sharper than I have been in the past. I’ve only had two weeks off. I had a pretty good finals and that helps give you momentum going into the new year.”

Clay Smith, from Broken Bow, Okla., roped at the 2015 NFR with Paul Eaves and their team roping partnership has stayed intact. Eaves has been to Las Vegas to compete in rodeo’s championships four times.  Last December was Smith’s first. With Smith doing the heading and Eaves heeling, they roped three steers in 16.7 seconds for a total of $7,006 each.

Shelby Herrmann left Denver last year with a second place finish. This year, the Stephenville, Texas resident got the buckle and $11,387.  She was the high-money winner at the rodeo and had a total time of 46.11 seconds on three runs.

This year’s rodeo paid $466,672. Other winners Sam Spreadborough, Snyder, Texas, saddle bronc riding; Trevor Brazile, Decatur, Texas, tie-down roping; and Cody Campbell, Summerville, Ore., bull riding.

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 21, 2016) --- There are just five more performances left at the National Western Stock Show rodeo before the final performance on Sunday where the 2016 rodeo champions will be crowned.

Five performances might seem like a lot, but here it means that 13 of the 19 total have already been completed. Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events started in the Denver Coliseum Jan. 15. Contestants have two full rounds of competition where their scores and times are added together to determine who will compete at Sunday’s U.S. Bank Championship Finals.

Two contestants that were here the first two performances jumped into the lead in their events and have maintained that position. Shelby Herrmann from Stephenville, Texas, took command in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race with runs of 15.35 and 15.30. She leads the overall standings with 30.65, a narrow margin over Colorado’s Ivy Conrado who has a total of 30.68.

In the steer wrestling, Baylor Roche, from Tremonton, Utah is at the top of the leaderboard with a total time of 8.7 seconds. Roche, who qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year is half a second ahead of Nick Guy from Sparta, Wis.

There are new leaders in the team roping after Thursday’s competition. Clay Smith from Broken Bow, Okla., and Paul Eaves from Lonedell, Mo., moved into the top spot with a total time of 10.3 seconds on two head. Adam Rose, from Willard, Mo., and Walt Woodard moved into a tie for second place with Kansas residents Coleman Proctor and Buddy Hawkins, III. Both teams roped two steers in 10.9 seconds. They are all looking good for Sunday’s finals where the lion’s share of the prize money will be paid.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Thursday with performances at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Team ropers excel at National Western Stock Show Rodeo

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 20, 2016) --- The tandem event of team roping saw lead changes in both preliminary rounds of competition in the Denver Coliseum on Wednesday.

During the matinee performance, reigning world champion heeler Kollin VonAhn from Blanchard, Okla., and his current partner Kaleb Driggers, from Albany, Ga., had the fast time of 4.5 seconds. While they didn’t have any success here in the first round, that put them in the lead of the second round.

That was also the fastest run of the rodeo here so far – until Wednesday night’s performance. Then it was a former college champion who provided excitement. Billy Bob Brown, from Carbon, Texas, won the team roping title at the College National Finals Rodeo twice and was also crowned all-around cowboy there in 2014.

Brown is heading here for Garrett Jess from Coulee City, Wash. They stopped the clock in 4.4 seconds and now have the fastest time at this year’s rodeo. They lead the first round and will rope their second steer here Thursday. With a solid run they could move into first place overall as well. Coleman Proctor from Coffeyville, Kan., and Buddy Hawkins III, from Columbus, Kan., lead that category with 10.9 on two runs. A 6.4-second or better run for Brown and Jess will move them into first place and see them back here on Sunday for the U.S. Bank Championship Finals.

Trevor Kastner is making plans to be here for that with two successful bull rides under his belt. Kastner is tied for the lead in the second round, thanks to his 84.5-point effort on Cervi Championship’s bull named Big Time. Combined with his previous score of 82.5 he is now second overall with 167. Cody Campbell from Summerville, Ore., still leads the bull riding with 167.5 points.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Thursday with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Cody Wright Back in form at National Western Stock Show Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 18, 2016) --- If the way he is riding at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo is any indication, saddle bronc rider Cody Wright from Milford, Utah will be headed to his 15th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) next December.

Cody, his brother Spencer and son Rusty all rode at the ninth performance in the Denver Coliseum on Tuesday night representing their home town of Milford, Utah. Cody had the high-marked ride of the rodeo at 81 points and is now tied for second in the first round. His success came aboard Summit Pro Rodeo’s Spider Woman.

Spencer and Rusty both had 78-point rides which is unlikely to get them checks in the first round. However, all three of them have their second-round horses here at the Wednesday afternoon performance. They each have another opportunity to place in that round and with good scores could be among the top 12 saddle bronc riders that advance to the U.S. Bank Championship Finals on Sunday.

A shoulder injury at the 2014 NFR kept Cody out of action for a big part of the season last year. He finished 20th in the world standings, outside of the top 15 who compete in Las Vegas at rodeo’s championships. Rusty made his first trip there last December and he and Cody are trying to become the first father-son duo to qualify for the NFR.

Splitting up the Wright trio on Tuesday was Curtis Garton, a native of New Zealand who was 79. Garton also is hoping to make history with an NFR qualification as the first qualifier to represent his homeland.

.            Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Joe Frost a contender at National Western Stock Show Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 17, 2016) --- While the 2016 rodeo season started last October, the winter building rodeos starting with the National Western Stock Show here traditionally kick off the year.

The buildings offer big prize money and opportunities to jump into the world standings. If a contestant wins here, it gives them a chance to build momentum and stay among the top 15 in the world standings who qualify for rodeo’s championsips, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) held in Las Vegas in December.

A cowboy that knows that well is Joe Frost from Randlett, Utah. Two years ago, he won the bull riding title at another building rodeo in Fort Worth, Texas, qualified for the NFR and finished second in the world standings. He competed at the NFR again last year and finished the season in sixth place.

The cousin of the late world champion bull rider Lane Frost is looking to add a gold buckle of his own to the families collection. He has started off the new year very well here in Denver and is one of three men to have ridden two bulls.

Frost competed in the first round on Sunday night scoring 87 points on Mo Betta Rodeo’s Broadway Joe. That is currently in a tie for first place with Bart Miller from Pleasanton, Neb. Then at the Monday matinee performance Frost came back and rode another bull from Mo Betta named Red Power and while that isn’t likely to place in the round, it put him second in the overall standings with a total score of 162 points.

Cody Campbell, from Summerville, Ore., leads the bull riding in the Denver Coliseum with a total score of 167.5 points. Colorado’s own Josh Koschel from Nunn is in third place with 159 points. Koschel has just returned to action after sustaining a broken leg during the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede last July.

All three of these men are likely to qualify for the U.S. Bank Championship Finals on Sunday, Jan. 24. A win here could mean a big boost to their bank account as well as an opportunity to move into the world standings. Denver’s rodeo features nearly half a million dollars in prize money and is one of the most prestigious on the circuit. The National Western Stock Show is in its 110th year and with that history comes a legacy of promoting and preserving the Western lifestyle.

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 17, 2016) --- Bareback riding once again proved to be the most exciting rodeo event at the National Western Stock Show on Sunday.

Saturday night Jake Brown, who is just coming off of his first qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) scored 84 points with a solid showing. He had his second horse here at the Sunday matinee performance and made the most of an opportunity. Brown, from Hillsboro, Texas, had a whopping 90-point effort on Calgary Stampede’s Reckless Margie.

Not only did that put him in the lead in the second round, he also took command of the overall standings. Brown has 174 points on two horses and moved Tanner Aus, from Granite Falls, Minn., to second place with 169.

Another first time NFR qualifier made a good showing here in the steer wrestling. Baylor Roche, from Tremonton, Utah, finished last year’s season in ninth place and won nearly $150,000. He got a big chunk of that in Las Vegas at rodeo’s championships and is ready for another trip there next December. A win at the National Western would certainly help him accomplish that goal. Roche took two steers to the ground in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday in 4.1 and 4.6 seconds for a total of 8.7 seconds. He now leads the overall standings by half a second. Nick Guy from Sparta, Wis., is second with 9.2 seconds on two runs.

Team ropers Coleman Proctor, from Pryor, Okla., and Buddy Hawkins, II, from Columbus, Kan., are new overall leaders as well with a total time of 10.9 seconds. Proctor also competed at last year’s NFR, but with a different partner. He was heading for Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kan., and finished the season in fifth place.

Hawkins qualified for the NFR in 2013 and is anxious to get back there again. He and Proctor have a significant lead, but will have to wait until next weekend to see if it holds. Paul Beckett from Laramie, Wyo., and Chad Wahlert from Kersey, Colo., are second with 12.2.

Regular rodeo competition continues here through Jan. 23 where all of the U.S. Bank Championship Finals qualifiers will be determined. All of these contestants are in good position to make the trip back here next week, but with much more competition to come, their leads could be in jeopardy.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Monday at 1. That will be followed by the Martin Luther King Jr., African American Heritage Rodeo of Champions at 6 p.m.

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 16, 2016) --- With three rodeo performances in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday, the National Western Stock Show Rodeo is well underway even though it has only been going on for two days.

Competition started on Friday with two performances. Saturday night’s was the fifth performances with 13 more to go before the U.S. Bank Finals on Sunday, Jan. 24. Tanner Aus, a bareback rider from Granite Falls, Minn., has every intention of being here and riding for a Denver Championship.

The former college champion is coming off of his first qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December where he finished the year in eighth place. He rode his first of two horses at the 11 a.m. performance and has the high-marked ride of the rodeo so far.

That ride came aboard a mare named Arapahoe owned by Summit Pro Rodeo and was worth 87 points. He came back at the matinee performance and rode Calgary Stampede’s Risque Elsie for 82. He now leads both preliminary rounds and the overall standings. His total of 169 points on two rides is 17 points ahead of the man in second place, Devan Reilly from Casper, Wyo.

“I was really looking forward to that one,” Aus said of Arapahoe. “Horses have a mind of their own and you never know. But usually when a horse has heart like that, you expect it to be good.”

There have been some stellar runs in tie-down roping. Sterling Smith, a WNFR qualifier from Stephenville, Texas, has the overall lead with a total of 15.4 seconds on two runs. His second round time of 7.0 is the fastest of the rodeo. Trevor Brazile, a 23-time world champion from Decatur, Texas, is in second with 16.3 seconds.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday at 2 and 6:30 p.m.

Shelby Herrmann takes command of barrel racing at National Western

By Susan Kanode

For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER (January 15, 2016) --- Last year, Shelby Herrmann left the National Western Stock Show Rodeo with a second-place finish in the barrel race.

This year, the Stephenville, Texas, cowgirl came here determined to win even more money in the Denver Coliseum. She had two outstanding runs here on Friday to take command of the leaderboard. She stopped the clock in 15.30 seconds at the matinee, and as the first Women’s Professional Rodeo Association member to compete took the early lead. Then in her second round of competition, Friday night, she was the last barrel racer to compete but still had a great run at 15.35 seconds.

Herrmann who competed at the College National Finals Rodeo last year for Tarleton State University has a half-second lead over the 2012 world champion Mary Walker from Ennis, Texas. Walker has a total time of 31.11 seconds compared to Herrmann’s 30.65.

Qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is every contestant’s goal and Herrmann came close last year finishing in 22nd place. The top 15 in the world standings get to compete at rodeo’s championships in Las Vegas in December. She won $11,380 here in 2015 and is hoping for a repeat performance this year. Even though the rodeo has just started and there is lots of competition here before the final round on Jan. 24th, Herrmann and Walker will be favorites to make the trip back here and compete for the 2016 National Western Stock Show Rodeo title in the barrel race.

Another contestant hoping to win big money out of Denver is Colorado native Josh Koschel. The bull rider broke his leg last July at the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede. He has just returned to competition and was successful on both of his bulls Friday. The resident of Nunn, Colo., scored 77 and 82 and has a total of 159 points on two head.

He is one of two riders that have ridden two bulls. Cody Campbell from Summerville, Ore., leads the overall standings with 167.5 points. Koschel is in second place. They are both in good positions to be making the trip back here for the finals.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday with performances at 11 a.m., 3:30 and 8 p.m.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2016) --- The first round of the Denver Chute-Out saw Shane Proctor move to the top of the leaderboard and collect the first check out of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Blue DEF Tour stop.

Proctor, from Grand Coulee, Wash., rode a bull named Little Turbo owned by Diamond S from Weatherford, Texas. When the judges added up the scores, he had an 88.5 by his name and a $2,863 check. More importantly it assures him a spot in the semi-finals which will be held Wednesday night. He is in great position to advance to the final round which will also be held on Wednesday.

The Denver Chute-Out has become a favorite stop for rising stars as well as seasoned veterans of the Professional Bull Riders. The National Western Stock Show offers an opportunity for successful riders to move into the elite Built Ford Tough Series. For rider’s who are already seeded, it helps them maintain their status and gives them the chance to win a buckle out of the Mile High city.

Proctor and last year’s reserve world champion Kaique Pacheco from Sao Paulo, Brazil, also competed head-to-head in a bounty match. They each attempted to ride a bull for eight seconds where the man with the highest score would receive a $5,000 bonus. Proctor came off just under six seconds while Pacheco managed to ride the full eight. He rode J.J.’s Pride for 90-points to collect the check.

Pacheco also rode during the competition, scoring 87.5 points to tie for second place with Roscoe Jarboe from New Plymouth, Idaho. They each received $1,789.

The lion’s share of the prize money will be paid after the final round on Wednesday night where the Denver Chute-Out champion will leave with a check for over $16,000. Each of the three preliminary rounds offers prize money, so the champion here could win up to $20,000.

The final performance of the PBR Blue DEF Tour stop will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Denver Coliseum.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 11, 2016) --- A 19-year-old from New Plymouth, Idaho, stole the show at the first performance of the Denver Chute-Out at the National Western Stock Show on Monday night.

Roscoe Jarboe rode a bull named Smoke Wagon owned by Shad Smith/Cervi for 87.5 points to take the lead in the first round of the bull riding which is part of the Professional Bull Rider’s Blue DEF Tour. The event features 90 bull riders competing over three nights for a purse that is in excess of $80,000.

The riders were split into two groups with 45 competing on Monday night. Tuesday night will see 45 more attempting to make an eight-second ride. Then the top 30 from the first round will advance to a semi-final round on Wednesday night. Scores will be added together where the top 15 advance to the final round also held Wednesday, Jan. 13th. At the conclusion of that performance the Denver Chute-Out Champion will be crowned based on his total score on three bulls.

Two bull riders that will not have the opportunity to advance to Wednesday night’s semi-finals are Cody Campbell from Summerville, Ore., and Neil Holmes from Houston, Texas. The Justin Sportsmedicine Team took both men out of the arena on a backboard. Holmes was slammed into the bucking chutes when he came off early and was knocked unconscious. Campbell also came off early and had a similar result and to add insult to injury, the bull stepped on him. Both men were evaluated by medical staff onsite and are expected to make full recoveries.

The second performance of the Denver Chute-Out begins Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m.
