Casey Breuer hoping to cash in at Caldwell Night Rodeo

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 17, 2016) – With the regular rodeo season winding down, rodeo contestants are making last ditch efforts to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and many of them are here for the 82nd annual Caldwell Night Rodeo.

Casey Breuer is one that has an opportunity for success in the bareback riding that is sorely needed. The Mandan, N.D., resident is currently 22nd in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. While he is seven spots out of the top 15 that qualify for the NFR, it is still well within his reach.

Breuer moved to the top spot on the leader board here on Wednesday night with an 80-point ride on a young horse, Big Blue, from the Burch Rodeo Company out of Rozette, Wyo. With two performances left before Saturday night’s championship finals, and lots of talented athletes competing in those, Breuer’s spot on the leader board could easily change.

However, he should be among the top 12 that compete on Saturday where the lion’s share of the $291,757 purse will be paid. Last year’s bareback champion here, Clint Laye, won over $5,000. That would be nearly enough to move Breuer into the top 15.

After a shut-out on Tuesday night, there was a lone bull rider to make it to the eight-second buzzer on Wednesday. Lonnie West who came here from Cadogan, Alberta, rode Powder River Rodeo’s Landshark for 78.5 points. With the bull power here, anyone who has a qualified ride is likely to get a paycheck giving West a reason to celebrate in front of the near capacity crowd.

The bull riding is the only event that won’t have a final round of competition. Each of the entries has one opportunity to ride and checks will be paid based on that one score. Eight places will be paid, so even if he doesn’t get a first place check, West should be among the bull riders who leave here with some money.

The third performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18. It will be Power of Pink night raising money for local women to get free mammograms. More information is available at www.caldwellnightrodeo.com
