Olin Hannum on track for first win at Reno Rodeo

For the Reno Rodeo

RENO, Nev., (June 23, 2016) – In a picture-perfect steer wrestling run, Olin Hannum stopped the clock in 3. 5 seconds to have the fastest run of the rodeo so far.

For Hannum, it was huge as it put him in first place in the second round and in the overall standings. With just 13 steer wrestlers left here to compete, Hannum is in really good shape to enter Saturday night’s championship finals at the top of the pack. If he remains in first place, it would be the first set of Reno Rodeo championship spurs that the former college football player has won.

It would be the third set for his family. His younger brother Jake won the all-around title here in 2007 competing in the tie-down roping and team roping. That same year, Jake qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in the tie-down roping. His father, the late Jack Hannum won the steer wrestling in 1983 which was the last of five times that he competed at the NFR.

An appearance at the 2011 NFR is the only one that Olin Hannum has made. He just missed it last year finishing in 17thplace. He isn’t ranked so far this year, but a big win here would certainly give him an opportunity.

The first checks of the 97th Reno Rodeo were paid on Thursday night. Taos Muncy and Rayn Mackenzie split the first round of saddle bronc riding and each won $2,988. Muncy, from Corona, N.M., rode Rosser Rodeo’s Hat Stomper. Big Bend Rodeo’s Crash Gate took Mackenzie from Homedale, Idaho to the pay window.

In the bareback riding, Ty Fast Taypotat won the first round. The Regina, Saskatchewan native won $3,546 for an 85.5 point ride on Rosser Rodeo’s Gold Coast Jackie.

Friday Night’s rodeo begins at 7. p.m. and is Pink Night to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.  At the conclusion of the rodeo all of the round winners will be paid and championship finals qualifiers will be determined.
