RACES TIGHTEN IN ROUND TWO OF THE 2015 CANADIAN FINALS RODEO

It was big smiles and big dollars for the team roping duo of Roland McFadden and Tyrel Flewelling as they posted a rapid 5.0 second run. The go-round win boosted the team's earnings to $26,795.20, less than $700 behind leaders Justin and Brett McCarroll of Camrose.

"I got a real good start," the Vulcan Alberta header McFadden commented after the run. "My horse comes up the wall real hard which is so important in this building. And then we finished fast which was the key to getting that time."

Both ropers credited their horses with the success of the run. "I love my mother and I love my horse," McFadden grinned.

"He's a horse I kept over the winter for Paul Fuller a few years ago and I really liked him. Paul agreed to sell him to me as long as Iagreed to keep him forever, which was fine with me. Charlie's not going anywhere."

Flewelling, a two-time heeling champion, was equally pleased with his mount. "He's not a real likable horse but he just does a great job.

I rode (Tick) when I won the title with Kolton Schmidt in 2013 and he just keeps getting better and better. This is the toughest arena we rope in all year because it's so narrow but these two horses are perfect for this building. Tonight was our run."

In the saddle bronc riding Sam Kelts met up with an old friend, the Northcott two-time Saddle Bronc of the Year, Get Smart.

"I've had him five times and I won three times and the other two times he cow-killed me. That's the deal with him. If guys ride him they're usually gonna get a pretty big cheque." Kelts' 'big cheque' jumped the Millarville cowboy to third place in the season's standings, $23,000 back of leader Cody Demoss of Heflin, Louisiana.

"Cody will be hard to catch," Kelts acknowledged, "I'm going to have to stay really hot or he's going to have to slow down a little."

Caleb Bennett of Tremonton, Utah continued his assault on the bareback riding leaderboard, with a second straight round win, this time courtesy of an 88 point ride on a Bar C5 bucker called Virgil. The win takes him to just a little south of $25,000 in two nights of action and pulls him still closer to season leader Jake Vold. Bennett started the CFR $31,000 in arrears of the defending Canadian champion but that margin has been reduced to just $16,000.

In the steer wrestling, the man with eleven Canadian titles to his credit, Curtis Cassidy, jumped into contention for a couple more with a 4.4 second winning run. The $12,159.64 cheque moved the Donalda, Alberta man into fourth spot in the steer wrestling and to the lead in the High Point standings, a title Cassidy has won eight times previously.

Burneyville, Oklahoma teenager, Cayla Melby, came back from an opening night slip on third barrel to run a flawless 14.713 to keep season leader, Nancy Csabay in her sights. The seventeen year-old Permit Award winner trails Csabay by $18,000 as the Taber cowgirl collected a second consecutive runner up cheque to maintain her grasp on top spot.

And for the amazing veteran bull rider, Scott Schiffner, the beat, as they say, goes on. Schiffner posted an 86.5 score on the Big Stone Rodeo bull, Attitude Dude, to capture the go-round win. The two time Canadian champion and fifteen time finalist was his usual steady self on a night that saw the bull riding title door open when season leader and defending champion, Dakota Buttar, bucked off the John Duffy Rodeo bull, Piranha.

And in the tie-down roping, Logan Hofer of Magrath, Alberta was the last man out and posted a smooth 7.5 seconds to capture the go-round win.

The six-time finalist pushed his earnings to $28,341.87 leaving him less than $8,000 behind leader, Ryan Jarrett of Comanche, Oklahoma.

In the junior events, Tanner Young of Ponoka, Alberta spurred out a 63.5 to win the round in the novice bareback riding; Keenan Reinhardt was an outstanding 79.5 on Kesler's Paper Clip in the novice saddle bronc riding, and the see-saw battle in the junior steer riding saw Airdrie's Owen Berreth close to within $101 of leader Luke Ferber with an 80 point ride.

Tonight saw the prestigious Douglas Lake Ranch Cowboy of the Year award go to long-time rodeo announcer, David Poulsen of Claresholm, Alberta. The thirty-six year veteran of the microphone was completely surprised by the award as he received a Ross Contway bronze, a Troy Fischer buckle and a leather bound Bible from the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys.
