For the Puyallup Pro Rodeo

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept. 10, 2016 — There was not a happier rodeo contestant in Puyallup on Friday than bull rider Jordan Wacey Spears from Redding, Calif.

He entered the Justin Boots Playoffs in fifth place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) World Standings, so as long as he is healthy, he will be competing at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. But every dollar he can win between now and then will add to his checking account and narrow the margin between he and first-place ranked Sage Kimzey from Strong City, Okla.

Spears has been very successful here so far, riding both of his bulls on Saturday for 86.5 and 88 points respectively. Those were the high scores in the first and second rounds and they each got him a $2,400 check. He enters Sunday’s championship finals in first place with a total of 174.5 points on two head and is in the lead by eight points. All that stands in the way of him earning a new trophy buckle here is an eight-second ride aboard the bull named Crystal Clear from Growney Brothers. Speers does have his work cut out at Crystal Clear has yet to be ridden at a PRCA rodeo this year.

Spears will compete at his second NFR in December. He qualified the first time in 2014 then missed last year. His first trip there was successful with a round win and a couple of other checks. He is hoping to improve on that this year and with just 20 days left in the regular season, he is working to end that with a bang.

Kimzey will also advance to Sunday’s championships. He enters the rodeo in third place with 159.5 points. Jeff Askey from Athens, Texas, is in second with 166.5.

Another contestant that has dominated here is barrel racer Ivy Conrado from Hudson, Colo. She won both of the preliminary rounds and over $2,800. Conrado was ranked fifth in the world standings prior to her success here.

Drama unfolding at Washington State Fair Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

For the Puyallup Pro Rodeo

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept. 9, 2016 — With just 20 days left in the regular rodeo season, contestants are jockeying for position in the standings and nowhere is that more evident than right here at the Justin Boots Playoffs.

As part of the Washington State Fair, the rodeo is a very important stop for anyone hoping to be in the top 15 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Bill Tutor, a bareback rider from Huntsville, Texas, is one of those cowboys fighting for a spot in the world standings. He entered the rodeo in Puyallup in 16th place. On Friday afternoon, Tutor got on Growney Brothers bucking horse named Beaver Fever and had an outstanding effort. When the judges added up their scores, he was the leader of the pack with an 87.5.

However right behind him was Teddy Athan from Livermore, Calif., who scored 87 on Calgary Stampede’s Reckless Margie. Athan is 18th in the world after winning the Ellensburg, Wash., rodeo last week. Tutor’s half-point advantage may get him a bigger check in the first round, but Athan stands to win more overall here in Puyallup. He had a 77.5-point ride Friday night and leads overall with a total of 164.5 points.

Tutor, however is on the bubble again. He scored 64 points on Friday night to have a total of 151.5, currently in sixth place. He will have to wait through the next 12 contestants to see if he is among the championship round qualifiers here.

“It’s like the standings for the NFR,” Tutor said. “I think it’s going to come down to the very last ride that someone makes. I sure hope I’m among the guys that make it, but even though the season is almost over there is still a lot of money to be won and I think it’s pretty exciting to be in the hunt.”

Saturday’s rodeos will feature 12 new contestants in each event. They have their first round at 1 p.m. and second round at 6:30. At the conclusion of Saturday night’s rodeo, preliminary rounds winners and the contestants advancing to Sunday’s championship will be determined.
