Steer wrestler Todd Gollaher wins Strathmore Stampede

STRATHMORE, Alberta – Being a full-time PRCA cowboy is something that wasn’t a top priority for steer wrestler Ted Gollaher.

The billing for Gollaher was working on his family’s registered black angus cattle ranch in Cascade, Mont.

Gollaher, however, has never lost his passion for the sport as he competes on a limited basis – and he couldn’t have been happier with his results at the Strathmore Stampede (July 31-Aug. 3).

Gollaher captured a career-best victory, winning the two-head average with a time of 9.2 seconds.

“Winning any rodeo is a great feeling,” said Gollaher, 39. “Strathmore being a big rodeo makes this win even more special and they give you a great buckle. Plus, you’re backed in against some of the best guys in the world and any time you can beat the guys who are going to the NFR or the Canadian Finals it’s a pretty good feat.”

Gollaher collected a $5,921 check for his performance at Strathmore. He was second in the first round with a 4.5-second run, and then clinched the average crown with his 4.7-second run in the second round.

“This is the biggest rodeo I’ve ever won,” Gollaher said. “I’ve always loved rodeo - the competition and adrenaline rush.”

In the second round in Strathmore, 2013 Steer Wrestling World Champion Hunter Cure was hazing for Gollaher, and Gollaher was riding Cure’s horse, Charlie.

“Charlie is a really nice horse,” Gollaher said. “He was rock solid and worked really good for me. I just wanted to get out from behind the barrier and make sure I got him caught and let the chips fall where they may.”

Gollaher has career earnings of $98,651 (2001-14). He entered the week with 2015 earnings of $1,432. His best season was 2009, when he earned $13,778 to finish 69th in the world standings. His older brother, Mike, also a steer wrestler, was the year-end Montana Circuit champion in 2012, and has $82,700 in career money (2000-14).

“I just rodeo when it fits my work schedule,” Ted Gollaher said. “There’s some summers I go hard and some summers I don’t. This year I have just kind of been easing around. I rodeo to try and make money. I go to where I can try and win and fill my pockets.”

Ted and Mike both work on the family ranch with their father, Myrle, and mother, Delight.

Other winners at the rodeo were bareback rider Caleb Bennett (179 points on two head), team ropers Clay Ullery and Kevin Schreiner (11.4 seconds on two head), saddle bronc riders Chuck Schmidt and Zeke Thurston (171.50 points on two), tie-down roper Erik Dublanko (17.2 seconds on two head), barrel racer Taylor Jacob (32.363 seconds) and bull rider Garrett Smith (172.50 points on two head).
