CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 19, 2015) --- Clayton Foltyn from Winnie, Texas, knows what it is like to have success at the Caldwell Night Rodeo – he won the bareback riding championship here in 2005.

Foltyn who finished fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association all-around world standings that year competed in that event as well as the bull riding. That was the first year that he qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the bull riding. He went back to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championships again in 2011.

For the past several years, Foltyn has been concentrating on the bull riding, an event that is near and dear to his heart. Foltyn’s grandfather Dickie Cox, who passed away last March, qualified for the NFR in the bull riding four times in the between 1963 and 1970. His father, Lane Foltyn, also competed in bull riding.

With two performances in the books here, there have been three bull riders who have made it to the eight-second mark. Foltyn is at the top of the leaderboard with an 83-point ride on D&H Cattle Company’s Paradise. The bull, like many of them here, is ridden less than 30% of the time.

A random draw is used to decide which riders get on which bulls and coincidentally, Foltyn has been matched up with Paradise on three different occasions and ridden him all three times. Both of the previous times were at Texas rodeos, in Austin in March of 2013 and in San Antonio last February.

“It’s safe to say I knew that bull,” Foltyn said. “It’s safe to say I was pretty happy to get the chance to ride him again.”

There are three more nights of bull riding to see if his lead holds. He is likely to get some money out of the Caldwell Night Rodeo with this ride, but will have to wait and see how much. He is currently 22nd in the world standings so every penny he earns could help him move up into the top 15 and have a chance to compete at his third NFR.

The two other riders that were successful here on Wednesday night were Jordan Hansen from Okotoks, Alberta who scored a 79 and NFR qualifier Ty Wallace from Collbran, Colo., who was 76.

Thurday night’s performance is Power of Pink Night where money raised will fund mammograms for local women. Junior rodeo action begins at 6:30 followed by the professional rodeo at 8 p.m.
