There was a lot on the line on night 4 of the Battle of the Rockies in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. All night downpours just before the races made for off racetrack conditions, two world champions would be declared, spots to the Calgary Stampede were on the line, exempt status for the 2016 WPCA Tour and the finalists for Sunday’s winner-take-all final for the 2015 Battle of the Rockies Championship would all be determined in a pressure packed Saturday night in Rocky Mountain House.
Kurt Bensmiller won his first career World Chuckwagon Championship by 81 points over reigning World Champion Kirk Sutherland. Obrey Motwylo was third, 2-time World Champion Rick Fraser was fourth and Evan Salmond placed fifth. Chance Flad captured his second career and second consecutive World Outriding title as well.
The final four are set for Sunday’s winner-take-all championship final heat for the Battle of the Rockies Title. Former Calgary Stampede Champion Chad Harden leads the way after finishing tops in the aggregate standings with a combined time of 5:06.64. He will be joined by rookie driver Dustin Gorst who will be making his first appearance in a championship final heat, Doug Irvine who will be making his second consecutive appearance in the Battle of the Rockies final, and 2015 Strathmore Stampede Champion Jason Glass. Former Medicine Hat Stampede Champion Evan Salmond missed the cut for Sunday’s winner-take-all final by 57 one-hundredths of a second.
On the day, Chad Harden, driving the Spartan Controls outfit, took the day money from barrel number 4 in the 6th heat after posting a run of 1:17.46. Doug Irvine was second, Dustin Gorst third, Evan Salmond and Jason Glass filled out the five fastest times on the night.
The final day of the 2015 WPCA Pro Tour at the Battle of the Rockies will be run on Sunday, August 16, 2015.
