Afternoon thunderstorms and hail made for some muddy conditions as night 2 of the Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby ran on a cool Saturday night. It was a very competitive night of racing, racetrack conditions were for the most part pretty good, and when the sun went down on Calgary, Colt Cosgrave, driving the Roadtrek Motorhomes outfit, took the day money with a run of 1:12.55.
From barrel number 4 in the opening heat, Cosgrave was nthe top wagon on the night by 14 one-hundredths of a second over reigning Calgary Stampede champion Kurt Bensmiller. Obrey Motowylo placed 3rd, John Walters was 4th, with Luke Tournier filling out the top five on the night.
After two runs, Obrey Motowylo leads the overall aggregate standings with a two-day total of 2:23.22. That puts him a whopping 45 one-hundredths of a second better than day 2 winner Colt Cosgrave. Defending GMC Rangeland Derby Champion Kurt Bensmiller sits third, with Luke Tournier and Kirk Sutherland in 4th and 5th place respectively. John Walters, Jamie Laboucane and Logan Gorst make up the top eight after night 2, with Mark Sutherland and Gary Gorst right behind in 9th and 10th respectively.
The Richard Cosgrave Memorial Trophy, symbolic of the Calgary Stampede aggregate winner will be declared after 8 nights on Friday, July 10, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from the two semi-final heats on semi on Saturday on July 11 will go into the winner-take-all championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2015 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Champion.
