Pro Rodeo Canada Press Release - July 21st

Pro Rodeo Canada July 21, 2015
For immediate release

ONE YEAR LATER

As anniversaries go, it’s not exactly one you’d be excited to celebrate. But, steer wrestler, Scott Guenthner gave himself a reason to mark the occasion by winning the most of any Pro Rodeo Canada competitor this past weekend.

“Yeah, it crossed my mind once,” conceded Guenther, who one year ago tore his pectoral muscles at a rodeo in Salinas, CA, putting an end to his 2014 season. “I’m pretty stoked to be back where I left off. That shoulder is actually almost stronger than my other shoulder now. I just have to do a lot more stretching before the rodeo than before.”

And the Consort, AB, cowboy is literally right back where he left off. Guenthner, who finished 9th in the Pro Rodeo Canada pre-CFR steer wrestling standings despite the injury, has now won $16,372 this season, just $323 less than at this same time last year.

The 24-year-old split 2nd at the 52nd Manitoba Stampede in Morris, MB, with a 4.4-second run and split 3rd at the Moose Mountain Rodeo in Kennedy, SK, with a 5.2-second trip to win $2,787 for the weekend.

“Jesse Lawes had the steer I ran in Morris at the Calgary Stampede,” offered Guenthner. “I hazed for him there. It was just an average steer but good on the ground. Layne Delemont won Coronation on my Kennedy steer.”

It was also an anniversary of sorts for team ropers, Clint Buhler and Trent Tunke, who are in their first full season of roping together on the Pro Rodeo Canada trail. Back in 2013, they hooked up for the so- called “East Run”.

“I was roping with Brett (McCarroll) and he didn’t want to go out east so I called Trent and asked him if he wanted to go,” explained Buhler. “We ended up placing 3rd at Morris and split 2nd in Kennedy.”

This time, it was two first place cheques from Morris and Maple Creek, SK, to win $2,449 each.

“There were only eight teams that caught in Morris,” shrugged the four-time CFR qualifier. “There was only one steer in the pen that we knew and we drew him. Then we just used our heads and made a smooth (6.2-second) run.”

“We drew the same steer in Maple Creek that out ran us in Taber two weeks ago so we weren’t too excited about that. I took a chance at the barrier this time and got a way better start and it was our fastest run (4.8-seconds) all year. It was a little redemption for us.”

Other top money winners from the weekend included bareback riders, Colin Adams ($2,616), Jake Vold ($2,318) and Kevin Langevin ($2,268); barrel racers, Chelsea Moore ($2,433) and Sydney Daines ($2,382); saddle bronc rider, Kyle Thomson ($2,775); bullriders, Tanner Girletz ($2,504) and Zane Lambert ($2,012); steer wrestler, Matt Mousseau ($2,320); tie-down roper, Dean Edge ($2,152); novice bareback rider, Wyatt Gleeson ($1,034); novice saddle bronc rider, Keenan Reinhardt ($943) and steer rider, Owen Berreth ($616).

Next up on the Pro Rodeo Canada schedule is the Medicine Hat Stampede in Medicine Hat, AB (July 23-25), the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo in Bonnyville, AB (July 23-25), the Cochrane Classic Bull Riding in Cochrane, AB (July 25), a bareback-only event in Bowden, AB (July 25) and the 102nd annual Bruce Stampede in Bruce, AB (July 26).
