It wasn't the easiest night for veteran bareback rider Steven Peebles.

The Redmond, Ore., cowboy got mashed in the chutes and almost had to get on a different horse. But in the end, he was all smiles.

With lightning flashing in the background, Peebles rode the Rosser Rodeo Co., bronc Peppy Bound for 83 points, good enough to get him his first Reno Rodeo championship and the Silver Spurs that go along with it.

A sold-out crowd of 8,700 packed the Reno Rodeo Arena and almost saw a Nevadan win the bareback riding for the first time since 2002. Winnemucca's Trenten Montero finished in a tie for second place once the final points were tallied.

Other champions crowned Saturday included Hunter Cure of Holliday, Texas in steer wrestling, Zane Dishion of Bishop, Calif., and Tommy Zuniga of Centerville, Texas in team roping, and Heith DeMoss of Heflin, La., in saddle bronc riding. Steer wrestler and tie-down roper Josh Peek of Pueblo, Calif., was the all-around cowboy for the most money earned by a competitor in multiple events.
