Pro Rodeo Returns to Sundre

It’s time to polish those cowboy boots and dust off the Stetsons.

That time of year is upon us — the annual Sundre Pro Rodeo takes place this weekend, starting Friday, June 19 and wrapping up Sunday, June 21.

“The rodeo committee is putting on a big push this year to have all the retailers in Sundre dress Western for rodeo week,” said Ron Smith, a rodeo committee member.

“The same goes for all our citizens. We’ve got to get that Western spirit showing to our visitors.”

The rodeo committee has plans to award the best-decorated retail store — in a Western theme of course — six free tickets to the rodeo, he said, adding the rodeo queens would be judging the competition.

As always, the rodeo itself will feature some of the best competing cowboys and cowgirls.

“In fact, last year Scott Schiffner of Strathmore won the $100,000 in bull riding in the Calgary Stampede and won first in Sundre two weeks before,” he said.

Also competing in Sundre last year was Dustin Flundra, who came in sixth but went on to win $100,000 at the Stampede in saddle bronc riding.

“We get the best cowboys in Sundre because they love our rodeo and it’s two weeks before the Calgary Stampede,” he said. “So you can see the best up close and personal.”
