FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 20, 2016) Derek Kolbaba has been on a bull riding winning streak this month. The 19-year-old cowboy from Walla Walla, Wash., has won three Professional Bull Riders (PBR) events in January, beginning with a $20,000 paycheck at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Then he won a PBR event in Pueblo, Colo., and notched another win at a PBR event in Reno, Nev.

At the final performance of Bulls’ Night Out at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Wednesday, Kolbaba rode Smith, Harper and Morgan Rodeo’s Ironman for 83.5 points. That was a good ride, but on a night when nine of 40 cowboys earned scores of 82 points or more, Kolbaba knew his only chance of getting a big check was to ride his bull in the short round when the top 10 scorers from the first round had a second chance to compete.

Kolbaba scored 86.5 points on Smith, Harper & Morgan’s Rondo for the highest score in Wednesday’s short round. That gave him 169 total points which put him second overall. His second ride Wednesday night earned him a total of $6,213.

“I was lucky to draw two bulls that kinda fit me, “said Kolbaba, a second-generation bull rider whose father competed in the 1990s.

But Kolbaba wasn’t the biggest bull riding winner at the Fort Worth Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Xtreme Bulls Event. That honor went to the 2006 Xtreme Bulls Champion Zeb Lanham of Sweet, Idaho who totaled 173 points Tuesday night. Lanham’s total winnings were $9,258.

Other big winners were Guthrie Murray of Miami, Okla., who earned $5,108 and John Young of Orient, Iowa, with $4,680. Corey Atwell of Moravian Falls, N.C., had the highest-marked ride of the event, scoring 88 points to win the long round and a total of $4,670.

Ladies’ Steer Riding was a new event at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo this year.  Eight women competed Wednesday night with three of them making qualified six-second rides. Jordan Halvorsen of Clayton, N.C., scored 75 points for first place and $1,000. Amber Toledo of Goodwell, Okla., scored 74 and Arizona cowgirl Karli Livingston rode her second bull in a row, scoring 67 points Wednesday after having the only qualified ride Tuesday.

Lanham and Kolbaba will both be back in action Thursday night at Will Rogers Coliseum as they will represent Denver and Reno, respectively, in the Fort Worth Super Shootout®, presented by Schaefer. The unique tournament-style rodeo features winners from eight of North America’s biggest rodeos competing in five events for bragging rights and $10,000 to each event winner. A limited number of tickets are still available for event which begins at 7:30 p.m.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo takes the arena at Will Rogers Coliseum beginning Friday, January 22, and continues for 29 performances over 16 days.
