Osceola County officials push for major rodeo event in central Florida
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. —
Osceola County officials are working to bring a major rodeo event to central Florida.
Bringing the rodeo event to central Florida is part of an agreement to allow Osceola County access to the Amway Center in exchange for the county’s $1 million contribution to building an Orlando soccer stadium.
The 10-day event, the National Finals Rodeo, has sold out for 27 years straight in Las Vegas. It’s business that Osceola County officials want to permanently bring to central Florida.
“If this could happen the ripple effect is a windfall for the entire central Florida region,” Osceola County Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins, Jr. said.
On Sunday commissioners voted during a special meeting to push forward with a proposal to move the National Finals Rodeo to Kissimmee.
“This is the Super Bowl of rodeo,” Pete Pace with the Silver Spurs Arena said.
Commissioners ultimately want a new $100 million stadium in Osceola County that the rodeo can call home, because the Silver Spurs Arena isn’t large enough. The proposal has the new stadium being built across the street from the Gaylord Palms Hotel off of Osceola Parkway.
But the stadium wouldn’t be ready until 2016 and that’s where the Amway Center comes into play. With the agreement between Osceola County, Orlando officials and the Magic, the National Finals Rodeo would initially be held at the Amway Center.
“It shows how regional leaders can come together, top organizations can come together and make something happen for the good of all central Florida.,” Hawkins said.
The next step is a 90-day negotiation period. Osceola County will be fighting Las Vegas, which has asked for 30 more days to make its own push to keep the event there.
