Stampede Nights: Charley Pride In Concert at Grey Eagle Casino

Terry Middleditch, Rodeo Country Radio

Tonight I attended my 22nd Charley Pride concert at the Grey Eagle Casino in Calgary. Way back in October 1976 a very nervous nineteen year radio broadcasting student (namely me!) did his first interview with a big country star that being Mr. Pride.  Charley was gracious and a true gentleman. I have had the great pleasure to met and enjoy his company and  concerts many times since.

Tonight was the first time for Charley to play the Grey Eagle Casino's Event Centre. It's a spacious venue with great sound, lighting and excellent sight lines from any seat in the room.

Listening to him sing, you would never know that Charley is in his late seventies, with his rich, supple baritone. In fine form, he effortlessly took the crowd of faithful fans on a journey with his biggest hits (Kiss An Angel Good Morning, Kawliga) to Country Standards (Hello Darlin, Act Naturally).  One definite highlight came with the audience singing along to Crystal Chandeliers.

Before we all knew it, the show was over ending with a special encore of the evergreen Cottonfields.

When so many of country legends having passed on,  it's a real treat to still enjoy this legend in concert. Pride fans in Southern Alberta will get another opportunity to see him i concert at the opening of the new arena in Medicine Hat It was announced tonight. It will be Charley's first appearance in 'The Hat in thirty nine years.

A special thanks to Brian Edwards from Rocklands Entertainment for the opportunity to take in the show tonight.

There are lots of great concerts coming to the Grey Eagle Event Centre including Martina McBride on July 24th (my birthday) and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on July 31st. For tickets & more info. here's the link...
