During a recent performance, Clay Walker supplied a heartfelt rendition of Merle Haggard’s signature song, “The Way I Am.”
The 47-year-old singer described his close connection to Haggard’s music to the crowd.
“My dad loved Merle and brought me up on his music,” he explained. “I’m gonna break my protocol and play one of my favorite old Merle songs. I’m sure my dad up there is listening.”
Although Walker is best known for his string of his in the 1990s, including the energetic “What’s It To You” and “If I Could Make a Living,” he strips everything down for this performance. If you’ve somehow forgotten just how mesmerizing Walker’s voice can be, this will remind you in mere seconds.
With the passing of Haggard earlier this year, many country stars have paid homage to the legend. Cody Jinks and Sam Hunt have both recently performed live covers of “The Way I Am” in honor of the Hag.
You can catch Clay Walker on tour through the end of the year, with stops planned at Billy Bob’s Texas and Cowboy’s Dance Hall in San Antonio, Texas. You can find a full list of tour dates at his official website.
